Houston in the summer

To the Girl with the Red Wagon

You are pulling behind you
a Latino girl with
wiry black hair
in a rusted red wagon
and you are both laughing -
that good, deep belly laugh
that simmers down when you take
a breath
like sloshing water
in the bottom of a can

she hands you slices of
an avocado
and you take what isn't yours
making a covenant of
friendship
in a world that dances to the beat
of the dollar

and as she throws her head back
to continue the gurgling sound
like the repeat barlines
at the end of some
forgotten sheet music
I wonder if one day you will
remember her face -
the girl whose father cut
your father's grass
for a living
